ASHVILLE, Ohio — New details have emerged in the stabbing of a 14-year-old that sent emergency crews to Teays Valley High School Wednesday morning, as authorities have now identified the suspect as a 16-year-old who stabbed the victim multiple times inside an Ashville residence before the victim and witnesses fled to the school seeking help.
According to a press release issued Wednesday afternoon by Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey and Ashville Police Department Acting Chief Christopher Hempstead, the Pickaway County Communications Center received a 911 call at 8:55 a.m. from a male caller reporting that his brother had just stabbed another person with a pocketknife at 521 Ashton Woods Drive in Ashville.
Dispatchers sent both Ashville Police officers and Pickaway County Sheriff’s deputies to the residence. Shortly after, a Teays Valley High School resource officer called for a squad after a stabbing victim arrived in the school lobby. Harrison Township Fire and EMS responded and transported the 14-year-old victim to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Investigators say the victim had not been at the Ashton Woods Drive residence long before a struggle broke out between him and 16-year-old Daniel L. Hazard. Hazard stabbed the victim multiple times. The victim managed to escape, along with three witnesses to the attack, and the group ran to the nearby school where they located the school resource officer.
When officers arrived at the Ashton Woods Drive residence, Hazard came out of the home willingly and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently transported to the Multi County Juvenile Detention Center in Lancaster, Ohio, where he was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony if committed by an adult.
Sheriff Hafey and Acting Chief Hempstead thanked Harrison Township Fire and EMS and the Teays Valley Local School District for their assistance throughout the incident.
The case remains under active investigation by the Ashville Police Department and the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
The Scioto Valley Guardian does not identify juvenile suspects by name in most circumstances. Daniel Hazard has been named here as his identity was released in an official law enforcement press release. The victim’s identity is not being released.
