JEFFERSONVILLE, Ohio — Village officials issued a boil water advisory Tuesday for homes along several streets on Jeffersonville’s west side, warning residents not to drink or cook with tap water unless it has first been brought to a boil.
The advisory covers West High Street from the village park to Darbyshire Drive, along with all of Darbyshire Drive, Yorkshire Drive, Woodsview Drive, Woodsview Court and Colonial Drive up to the village pool, according to a post from the village. Officials said the advisory will remain in effect until further notice, and did not specify what prompted it.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency recommends that public water systems issue boil advisories anytime pressure in a distribution system drops below 20 pounds per square inch, which can happen because of a water main break, nearby flooding, firefighting operations or routine maintenance work. A boil advisory does not necessarily mean the water is contaminated — it is a precaution meant to guard against bacteria that could enter pipes while pressure is low.
State guidance calls for residents under an advisory to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it to drink, cook, make ice, mix baby formula, brush teeth or wash dishes. Most boil advisories are lifted within a day and a half, though Ohio rules require at least two consecutive clean bacteria tests before one can be lifted, a process that takes a minimum of 48 hours to complete.
Jeffersonville, a village of roughly 1,250 residents in Fayette County’s Jefferson Township, operates its own water system and has faced water problems before. In October 2024, a break in a 4-inch water main cut off service to parts of the village for several hours and triggered a 48-hour boil advisory while crews made repairs. In 2025, the village’s water system was also cited by the Ohio EPA for delaying required E. coli sampling after a routine test showed signs of bacteria in the distribution system, though officials said at the time that no boil advisory was necessary.
