WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — The Fayette County Dog Shelter will cut its adoption fee to $20 for a five-day stretch later this month as part of a national push to find homes for shelter animals.
The shelter, which operates under the direction of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, said the discounted adoptions will run Aug. 24-28 as part of its participation in “Clear the Shelter,” an event the agency is holding to reduce crowding at its Robinson Road facility. The $20 fee includes spay or neuter surgery, a DHPP vaccine, a Bordetella vaccine, a rabies vaccine and a dog license, the shelter said in a Facebook post.
“Clear the Shelters” is a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign that runs each August, organized by NBCUniversal’s local television stations and Telemundo in partnership with shelters and rescues across the country. The campaign began in 2015, growing out of a 2014 pet adoption event in North Texas, and has since helped place more than 1.3 million animals in homes, according to the campaign’s national organizers. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has sponsored the effort for nine consecutive years.
The Fayette County shelter describes itself as “a small facility with limited space” and says on its website that adoptions and rescue placements are vital to managing the county’s stray dog population. Dog Warden Nelson Prater oversees the shelter along with two assistants, who also respond to calls involving loose dogs, bite complaints and animal damage reports countywide, according to the sheriff’s office.
The shelter is overseen by Fayette County Sheriff Vernon P. Stanforth, who has led the office since 1997 and has previously pushed to upgrade conditions at the county pound.
