CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Residents of four south-central Ohio counties will have a chance to get rid of old refrigerators, stoves, water heaters and other bulky appliances for free next month at an event organized by the RPHF Solid Waste District.
The Appliance Recycling Event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 18 at the Ross County Fairgrounds, according to a flyer shared by the district and posted by the City of Chillicothe. The event is open to residents of Ross, Pickaway, Highland and Fayette counties, but businesses will not be accepted.
The city noted in its post that the event is not city-sponsored, but said it wanted to help spread the word because many Chillicothe residents are interested in properly recycling large household items.
Residential appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters and stoves will be accepted at no charge, according to the district. Organizers are asking residents to make sure appliances are clean before dropping them off — food should be removed from refrigerators and freezers, and clothing should be removed from washers and dryers. The district said it reserves the right to refuse any appliance that does not meet that standard.
The event will run on a first-come, first-served basis, and organizers warned that due to high demand, they will stop accepting items once collection containers are full.
A number of items will not be accepted, including vapes and e-cigarettes, CFL and other light bulbs, chemicals, hazardous waste, damaged or leaking batteries, alkaline batteries, aerosol or pressurized air canisters, items containing polychlorinated biphenyls, and medical waste.
The district said the event will go on as planned in the rain, though severe storms could cause delays or a cancellation for safety reasons.
The RPHF Solid Waste District was established in 1989 to manage solid waste disposal for Ross, Pickaway, Highland and Fayette counties. The district operates recycling drop-off locations across the four-county region and runs programs for hard-to-recycle items such as tires, electronics and household hazardous waste, in addition to community programs including litter kit loans and event recycling bin loans.
