PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Southern Ohio Medical Center will host a free breast cancer screening event next month, offering no-cost clinical exams and same-day mammograms to women who qualify, the Portsmouth City Health Department announced in a social media post.
The screening is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the SOMC Cancer and Infusion Center, 1121 Kinney’s Lane in Portsmouth. Women interested in attending are asked to call 740-356-CARE to schedule an appointment.
Free clinical breast exams will be provided at the event, and same-day mammograms will be offered if warranted following the exam, according to the health department. If a mammogram is performed, the patient’s insurance will be billed.
For women who are uninsured or underinsured, financial assistance applications will be available through Ohio’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project, in cooperation with SOMC. The state program, administered by the Ohio Department of Health since 1994, provides no-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic testing — including mammograms, clinical breast exams, ultrasounds and biopsies — to eligible women 21 and older whose household income falls at or below 300% of the federal poverty level.
The health department said women are eligible for the screening if they are age 40 or older, are younger with a family history of breast cancer, or have noticed an abnormal finding during a self breast exam.
The event is being held in partnership with Fight Cancer Save Lives — ACT Now Coalition of Scioto County, a Lucasville-based nonprofit that supports local cancer awareness and early-detection efforts.
