HILLSBORO, Ohio — The Highland County Health Department and Highland District Hospital will host a free “Brake for Breakfast” event in the health department’s parking lot on Oct. 22 to raise awareness about breast cancer, the health department said in a Facebook post.

The no-cost breakfast and bag will be available from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the health department’s parking lot at 1487 N. High St. in Hillsboro, while supplies last, according to the post.

The event marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October to encourage early detection. One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and routine mammograms remain the most effective way to catch the disease early, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends women ages 40 to 74 who are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every two years.

The health department encouraged residents to talk with their health care provider about breast cancer screening and to share that message with people they love, the agency said.

Residents with questions about mammogram screening or other breast health resources can contact the Highland County Health Department at 937-393-1941. The department’s website lists several area mammogram providers, including Highland District Hospital, Adena Greenfield Medical Center, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Project and UC Health’s mobile mammography unit.
