HILLSBORO, Ohio — The Highland County Health Department and Highland District Hospital will offer no-cost digital screening mammograms on Nov. 19, the health department said in a Facebook post.
The screenings will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Highland District Hospital, 1275 N. High St. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by calling 937-363-6266, according to the health department.
Women are eligible if they meet all of the following criteria, the health department said: they are age 40 or older, have not had a mammogram within the past year, have no current problems with either breast, and have no insurance, limited insurance or a high deductible.
The event is part of a broader push during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October to encourage early detection. One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and routine mammograms remain the most effective way to catch the disease early, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends women ages 40 to 74 at average risk for breast cancer get screened every two years.
The health department encouraged residents who know someone who may qualify to share information about the event.
