HILLSBORO, Ohio — The Highland County Health Department will host a Hoxworth Blood Center donor bus next week, giving area residents two separate windows to roll up a sleeve and help replenish the region’s blood supply.
The bus will be parked outside the health department, 1487 N. High St., on Friday, Oct. 9, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., the health department said in a Facebook post. Appointments are encouraged and can be booked online or by phone, and donors can speed up their visit by completing Hoxworth’s QuickPass screening ahead of time.
Every donor who gives that day will receive a wearable blanket, the health department said, and officials are asking donors to also consider giving a Red Cell donation, a process that collects only red blood cells so the body can more quickly replace the plasma and platelets that are returned to the donor.
Hoxworth Blood Center, the University of Cincinnati’s affiliated blood bank, supplies blood products to 31 hospitals across 18 counties in southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana, according to the center. The center traces its roots to Dec. 10, 1938, when Dr. Paul I. Hoxworth opened it inside Cincinnati General Hospital as one of the nation’s first community blood banks. The University of Cincinnati took over sponsorship of the service in 1944, and it was renamed in Hoxworth’s honor in 1973. It remains the oldest continuously operating blood center in the country.
Those interested in donating can schedule an appointment at hoxworth.org/groups/highlandhealth or by calling 513-451-0910.
