WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold its Fire Prevention Parade Sunday, with lineup set for 1 p.m. and the procession stepping off at 2 p.m., the department said in a Facebook post.

The parade will begin at the department’s station on Fourth Street and wind through the West Portsmouth street grid, following a route posted by the department that loops past Sixteenth Street, Lester Street and Haig Avenue before heading south through Tenth, Seventh, Sixth and Fifth streets and returning along Second Street near the station.

The department, which fields about 30 volunteer firefighters out of a single station, asked residents to line the streets, wave to the apparatus and show support for the township’s all-volunteer department. Firefighters will serve hot dogs at the station once the parade concludes, according to the post.

The parade falls just after National Fire Prevention Week, observed Oct. 4-10 this year under the National Fire Protection Association’s theme “Charge Into Fire Safety,” which focuses on reducing fire risks tied to charging phones, laptops and other lithium-ion battery devices.

Washington Township covers roughly 25 square miles along the Ohio River in southern Scioto County and is home to about 5,200 residents, according to U.S. Census figures, with West Portsmouth as its largest community. Much of the township’s land lies within Shawnee State Forest.
