WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — The Washington Court House Fire Department will host a Veteran & First Responders Appreciation Dinner and Chili Cook-Off next month to honor local service members and emergency personnel, the department said in a Facebook post.

The event, billed as a “Military Chow Hall,” is set for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the fire department’s station at 225 E. Market St. Admission is free for all active and veteran service members and first responders, with general admission set at $5 for everyone else, according to the department.

The menu centers on a chili cook-off, with entrants competing for bragging rights as attendees sample chili and vote for their favorite. Jumbo loaded baked potatoes will also be served alongside the chili, the department said. Residents interested in entering the cook-off are asked to contact the department directly.

The dinner comes during a year of change at the department. Chris Wysong was named to succeed longtime Fire Chief Tim Downing, who retired in December, and the department rolled out new Class A dress uniforms and a redesigned department patch at a change-of-command ceremony over the summer.

Washington Court House Fire-Rescue is the primary fire and EMS provider for the city, which serves as the county seat of Fayette County, and is staffed by a combination of career personnel and volunteers operating out of a single station.

The department said the dinner is intended to thank the veterans, police officers, firefighters and paramedics who serve the community. Organizers encouraged the public to attend regardless of service background.
