PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The City of Portsmouth’s Design and Review Board will meet Wednesday to consider a proposal to paint a downtown building a shade of pink and to follow up on a citation issued to a local vape shop, according to a meeting agenda posted by the city.
The board is scheduled to convene at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, in the second-floor engineer’s office of the City Building, 728 2nd St.
Under new business, the board will review an application submitted by Katie Hanes, of Wheelersburg, seeking approval to alter the exterior of a building at 440 2nd St. The application calls for painting the building a light shade of pink, with three color samples — labeled Pink Ribbon, Pixie Dust and Punk Mist — submitted for the board’s consideration, according to the agenda. The proposal also includes adding awnings over the doors and windows on the first floor. Only the building’s 2nd Street-facing side would be repainted; the rest of the structure would remain as is.
The five-member Design and Review Board is appointed by Portsmouth City Council and is charged with protecting the historic character of the city’s Boneyfiddle district, one of the city’s designated historic preservation areas. Property owners seeking to alter a building’s exterior, construct new buildings or demolish structures within the historic district must first obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness from the board before the city will issue a building permit, under the city’s zoning code.
In old business, the board is also set to discuss a follow-up related to a citation issued to VIP Vape Shop, according to the agenda. Further details on the citation were not included in the posted agenda.
The board will also vote to approve minutes from its March 27 meeting. According to the agenda, the board did not meet in April, May or June because it had no applications to review.
