WAVERLY, Ohio — As rain and thunder rolled through Pike County this week, the dogs waiting for homes at the Pike County Dog Shelter got peanut butter-filled Kong toys to help pass the gloomy day, and a chance for the public to meet them.
The shelter, at 2575 Alma Omega Road, shared photos of five dogs — Bennie, Kodiak, Chief, Adam and Fawn — working over their treats in their kennels. The shelter said in a Facebook post that every dog in its care has its own personality and is waiting for a family to call its own.
The Waverly facility operates as Pike County’s dog pound, taking in strays and surrendered dogs under the county commissioners and the Pike County Sheriff’s Office. Pike Pet Pals, an all-volunteer group, works alongside the shelter to help place its dogs into adoptive and foster homes.
The shelter said residents interested in adopting one of its dogs can call (740) 474-3741 to set up a visit, and that it offers a foster-to-adopt option so prospective owners can make sure a dog is the right fit before finalizing an adoption.
Posts introducing adoptable dogs are a regular part of the shelter’s outreach as it works to find permanent homes for animals in Pike County.
