WASHINGTON DC — Pfizer is seeking approval from the U.S. government for COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5 to 11.
The company tweeted Thursday that they had filed the necessary application with the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA will convene and decide if the vaccine is deemed safe and effective for younger kids.
The company said that children within the age group should receive a third of the dose given to older individuals. Representatives with the company said, “after a second dose of the vaccine, children should have the same antibody levels as teens and young adults.”
Health officials have said that children are at a lower risk of severe complications from COVID-19, but children across the nation have died from the virus.
According to Pfizer, there have been no side effects found in the children they tested.
Assuming the FDA approves the application, Pfizer will need to await recommendation and approval from the Center for Disease Control.
