WILMINGTON, Ohio — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the entire Scioto Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Winter Storm Warning goes into effect from 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning until 7:00 a.m. Friday.
Forecasters with the NWS say significant icing will be possible across areas south of I-70. A quarter to a half-inch of ice is expected.
Most of the area will see rain during the day on Wednesday before transitioning to sleet and freezing during the overnight hours.
Officials say widespread power outages are likely across the affected areas. American Electric Power and the South-Central Power Company have placed multiple crews on standby in preparation for the storm.
The Ohio Department of Transportation says crews are ready for the pending winter weather. ODOT Press Secretary Matt Bruning told Columbus media Wednesday that crews are not going to pretreat roads due to rain in the forecast, but they will begin salting the roadways once the rain transitions to snow and ice.
In addition to the possibility of significant icing, snowfall will also be a factor. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service said 2 to 3 inches of snow can be expected on top of the ice accumulation.
