WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics released its August jobs report today. Numbers show a decline in new employment from July.
Economists say that growing concerns over inflation have caused many employers to hold back on new hiring. Over 300,000 jobs were still added last month while unemployment rates climbed only 0.2%, from 3.5% to 3.7%.
House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer said, “Today’s August jobs report is yet another piece of compelling evidence that our economy continues to recover and grow. The 315,000 jobs created last month again mean that more Americans are working now than before the pandemic or at any time in our nation’s history.”
The United States Labor Secretary Marty Walsh released a statement following the jobs report saying, “On Labor Day we honor the achievements of America’s workers, and in 2022 we have a historic victory to celebrate. Our nation’s working people have come all the way back from the depths of a global pandemic, regaining every job lost and more.”
He went on to add, “Since President Biden took office, we have added 9.7 million jobs to the economy. The unemployment rate has dropped to 3.7 percent. This job growth has been broad and widely shared.”
