COLUMBUS, Ohio — One Ohio lawmaker wants to make homemade moonshine legal in the Buckeye State.
On January 11, Republican State Senator Frank Hoagland introduced Senate Bill 13 which would legalize the home distilling of alcoholic beverages in the state of Ohio.
According to the proposed legislation, residents would be permitted to have a home distillery system and produce up to 100 gallons of alcoholic beverages. A person would then be able to transport the alcohol throughout the state without a permit.
The legislation does bar the home distiller from selling the alcohol produced.
In Ohio, it is illegal to produce moonshine and violators may face up to a year in jail. However, it is legal to make lower-grade alcoholic beverages like beer and wine for personal consumption.
