Spring is here, and with it comes the annual task of mowing the lawn. However, it is important to be aware of the potential presence of baby bunnies in your yard before firing up the lawn mower.
In the springtime, rabbits often nest in tall grass or other vegetation, making it difficult to spot their nests. These nests, called “forms,” are usually shallow depressions in the ground lined with grass and fur. Baby bunnies, or kits, are born with their eyes closed and no fur, and are dependent on their mother for survival.
Unfortunately, many baby bunnies are harmed or killed each year during the spring mowing season. To prevent this, experts recommend taking a few simple steps before mowing your lawn.
First, walk around your yard and inspect any tall grass or vegetation for signs of a rabbit nest. If you find a nest, mark it with a stick or flag to avoid accidentally mowing over it.
Next, try to schedule your lawn mowing for early in the morning or late in the evening, when rabbits are less likely to be active. This will give any rabbits in your yard time to move to a safer location.
Finally, if you do accidentally uncover a nest while mowing, stop immediately and try to cover the nest back up as best as you can. The mother rabbit may still return to care for her kits.
