WASHINGTON, D.C. — A bipartisan group of Ohio lawmakers and mayors is urging President Biden to select Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, as the headquarters for the U.S. Space Command.
In a letter to President Biden, the lawmakers, and mayors state that Ohio is the ideal location for the Space Command, citing the state’s strong military tradition, history of innovation, and skilled workforce of engineers and technicians.
The lawmakers and mayors also highlight Ohio’s recent economic development successes, including new investments from Intel, Honda, and LG. They argue that these investments demonstrate Ohio’s growing status as a center for research, technology, and innovation.
“Ohio’s many assets and central proximity within America’s heartland make it an ideal location, ensuring access to the workforce and technology necessary to fulfill the U.S. Space Command’s headquarters mission,” the letter said.
In addition to the letter, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown previously held a conference call to discuss the issue, joined by Elaine Bryant, Executive Vice President for Aerospace and Defense with the Dayton Development Coalition (DDC) and managing director with JobsOhio.
Bryant emphasized Ohio’s skilled workforce, quality of life, and strong support for military families while highlighting the extensive infrastructure and connection to the Space Command mission at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
“Ohio has the workforce, quality of life, and strong support for our military families,” said Elaine Bryant, DDC Executive Vice President for Aerospace and Defense.
The Ohio Mayors Alliance Board of Directors also expressed their support for locating the U.S. Space Command and Space Force units in Ohio. They emphasized the state’s extraordinary aviation legacy, innovation, and educational programs that contribute to the development of engineering and acquisition professionals.
The Biden administration is expected to make a decision on the location of the Space Command in the coming months.
