LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio — The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accidental shooting that occurred this morning at an apartment in Proctorville.
Melissa Callicoat, 46, reported that she was playing with a 38-caliber revolver with her boyfriend, Jeffery Leffingwell, 37, at around 6:40 am when the weapon accidentally discharged, striking her in the lower abdomen.
Ms. Callicoat was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, for treatment. Her condition is currently unknown.
Mr. Leffingwell was arrested and charged with Having Weapons Under Disability, an F-3 felony, due to his status as a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms.
