ATHENS, Ohio — Firefighters in Athens were busy over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon crews were dispatched to the Beasley Mills apartments on West Union Street. Upon arrival firefighters said heavy smoke was coming from a fourth-floor window.
Dispatchers say they then received a call from occupants on the second floor who were trapped and unable to exit the building. Firefighters were able to make entry onto the fourth floor where they discovered one unit fully involved.
In assisting with the situation, officers from the Athens Police Department were able to evacuate the trapped tenants.
The buildings sprinkler system, officials said, was able to contain the blaze and isolate it to one location. A dog and cat were also rescued from inside the structure.
Several tenants have been displaced due to damage caused by the fire. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the blaze has yet to be made public.
