ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — The Athens County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio Traffic Safety Office, and neighboring jurisdictions, is launching a month-long traffic enforcement initiative. Starting May 1st, 2024, and continuing through May 31st, 2024, law enforcement will increase their presence on streets, county roads, and highways to deter traffic violations that endanger our community.
As the holiday season approaches, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes essential safety practices for drivers:
- BUCKLE UP: Every trip, every time. Wearing a seatbelt can be a life-saving choice, reducing the risk of fatal injuries by 45%.
- STOP SPEEDING: Speeders account for approximately 63.6 million drivers nationwide. Speeding isn’t just aggressive; it’s also deadly.
- AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING: The use of electronic devices while driving has become an epidemic. Approximately 660,000 drivers are distracted at any given moment. Don’t let an emoji ruin your life.
- DRIVE SOBER: Even one alcoholic beverage can impair judgment. Designate a sober driver or use public transportation. Law enforcement maintains zero tolerance for drinking and driving.
