PIKETON, Ohio — Following an investigation by the Guardian, Pike Christian Academy (PCA) has announced it will no longer pursue the purchase of Zahn’s Corner Middle School. The school district made the announcement on Saturday, stating their decision on social media.
“After careful consideration and prayer, PCA school board has decided not to bid on Zahn’s Corner Middle School. We believe that God has something great in store for our school and we will continue to pray, work, and wait for His timing,” a PCA spokesperson posted on Facebook.
The Guardian’s investigation had revealed PCA’s interest in bidding on the school, which has been at the center of a storm of controversy due to its radioactive contamination. Zahn’s Corner Middle School was permanently closed after it was deemed unsafe for students, with issues arising from the radioactive isotopes being found inside the school.
Despite these concerns, the Scioto Valley Local Schools board plans to auction the property to the highest bidder. The real estate agent marketing the school described it as a “great investment opportunity” with its 53,000 square feet of space, complete commercial kitchen, and a variety of potential uses, including a training center, offices, medical facilities, sales, or manufacturing.
The decision to sell the property has sparked outrage among activists and community members. Protests have already occurred on July 17th, and more are planned for the “Open House” on July 24th.
Activists are calling for the sale to be halted entirely, citing the health risks posed by the radioactive contamination.
