A Ross County engineer building was destroyed Wednesday night in a large fire.
It happened along Fairgrounds Road outside Chillicothe at the county’s main engineering office.
The fire was called into dispatch just after 9 p.m. with 9-1-1 callers saying the building was fully engulfed in flames. When firefighters arrived on scene they were unable to initially make entry into the fenced-in property because of a locked gate. After about ten minutes, firefighters made their way inside.
Dispatchers said they believed the large building contained vehicles, but were not entirely sure.
Deputies evacuated Fairgrounds Road due to safety precautions because firefighters said they did not know what was inside the building fueling the flames; large explosions and bangs could be heard, and by 10 p.m., the fire still raged out of control with flames shooting as high as 15-20 feet.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
