State and local leaders will come together on Wednesday to announce a new district in Columbus.
The Capital city already is known for its many culture-like neighborhoods, such as the Arena District, the Brewery District, and the Short North, among others.
The “Innovation District” will be announced in a live media conference, which will be attended by Governor Mike DeWine and the city’s mayor, Andrew Ginther and streamed on the Ohio Channel.
In the brief announcement on Tuesday ahead of the event, a Governor’s spokesman said, “[It will be a] unique partnership and investment to drive innovation and job creation in Ohio.”
Last month, officials announced the same idea for Cleveland. In that announcement, it was said that, “The Cleveland Innovation District will be a center of excellence that acts as a catalyst for ongoing investment in Northeast Ohio, including the attraction of businesses and the talent needed to keep the state competitive in healthcare and IT.”
In the Cleveland build, it was said that the State of Ohio, JobsOhio, and Cleveland Clinic, would commit a combined $565 million to the Cleveland Innovation District; it was not immediately released on Tuesday how much will be invested into the Columbus project.
While the location and details of the Columbus plans were not entirely released, it’s likely the city could see a plan similar of that in Cleveland. There, the Innovation District will be a point of collaboration among healthcare, higher education, and business institutions, creating significant research, development, and job opportunities.
Construction plans will start as early as next month.
