Firefighters were on the scene of an anhydrous ammonia leak in Jefferson Township in Fayette County.
It’s all went down at 4111 McKillip Road at Nutrien Ag Solutions about a mile outside Jeffersonville Wednesday night.
Jefferson Fire Chief Jeff Warner said that the cause of the leak was due to rain and a change in temperature. According to employees, when a rapid drop in temperature occurs, sometimes valves will open up.
When firefighters arrived around 9:45 p.m., a strong smell of ammonia was in the air; so much so, that firefighters asked news media to stay back because the fumes could be felt inside throats and was causing burning eyes.
An audible hissing sound could be heard coming from one of the ammonia trailers before employees arrived on scene and clamped the hose.
Firefighters assessed the rest of the trailers with employees.
