A veteran is dead after being hit by a state vehicle near the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Chillicothe.
The call came in at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night along route 104 between the hospital and Chillicothe Correctional Facility after a VA patient was walking down the highway.
When troopers and medics arrived they saw 61-year-old William Ambos laying on the ground. Ambos, who is from Piketon, was not responsive when the police arrived and troopers started CPR.
After about 15 minutes, troopers called for the county Coroner. The driver of the car, Robert Lurty, 52, is a state employee for Chillicothe Correctional Institute and was driving a state prison vehicle.
Officials with the VA said Ambos was a patient who walked away and that staff was trying to locate him when the crash happened.
The southbound lanes on route 104 were closed. The patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
