CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A Washington Court House woman is facing multiple charges after police say she stole over $1,000 from WalMart in Chillicothe and had several drugs on her.
Janette Shaw, 39, was charged with two counts of theft and a drug charge on Monday. Reports from the Chillicothe Police Department show state that officers were called to WalMart on River Trace Lane after loss prevention officers called to say Shaw was leaving the lot, and had just stolen over $800 worth of merchandise.
Officers managed to stop the car before it made it onto Bridge Street.
“Ms. Shaw appeared very nervous with her hands trembling and shaking. Ms. Shaw immediately uttered that she was just going home to get her bank card,” an officer wrote in his report. “I advised Ms. Shaw of the reason for the stop and requested she step out of the vehicle. Ms. Shaw complied by opening her driver’s
door, during which time I observe a glass pipe sticking out in plain view.”
The officer said he detained the woman and searched her car, where he found numerous hydrocodone pills, the glass pipe, and what the officer believed to be crystal meth.
“I also located a black sock in the door with the pipe. The sock was found to contain another meth pipe and a blue/white container. The container was found to contain a white crystalline substance that I know through my training and experience to be methamphetamine. A black bag was located on the front passenger seat. Inside the bag was another sock with another meth pipe along with a plastic container holding several miscellaneous pills.”
Shaw told the officer the drugs were not hers and belonged to an old friend she met earlier in the day, who had asked her to dispose of them.
Officers later went to WalMart to speak with store managers about what Shawn had allegedly stolen. Once there, police were told that she was caught on video stealing 34 items, including a a Vizio Soundbar and Ninja Toaster Oven; total amount of the unpaid merchandise totaled $885.64.
Loss prevention told police that this was not the first time Shaw stole from their store. Back in April, they said, she was seen hiding multiple items in a trash can before walking out of the store. That theft, according to the store, totaled nearly $400.
“Ms. Shaw was questioned about both incidents and began crying and apologizing for the crimes,” the officer said in his report.
She’s due in court next week.
