Samuel Lewis Cummings, 89 of McDermott, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021 at SOMC Hospice. He was born on March 23, 1932 in Vinton County, Ohio to the late George Cummings and Cynthia Ponn Cummings. On December 25, 1973 he was united in marriage to LaVonda Crabtree Cummings. In addition to his wife of 47 years he is survived by his step children; Ronald (Renee) Crabtree of Chillicothe, Angela (James) Crabtree Barrett of Ashland, Kentucky and Regina (William) Crabtree Mahle of Mentor; grandchildren, Nicole Brooks, Todd (Veronica) Phipps, Jason (Emily) Phipps, Tracie (Nick) Broughton, Amon Crabtree and Enrique Crabtree; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; two nephews James (Kathy) Cummings and Doug (Crystal) Cummings; three nieces, Sue Schneider, Connie (John) Humphrey and Kay (Rick) Warner. In addition to his parents, Samuel was preceded in death by two brothers; James Cummings and Edward Cummings; step-sons, James R Crabtree and Kent L Crabtree; and one grandson Mason Schneider.

Sam was an elder in the Christ’s Restoration Branch and a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 363 in Lucasville.  Sam proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He was a graduate of Vinton County Rural High School and completed his post-secondary education at Graceland University and Michigan State.  He received his Master’s Degree from Purdue University.  He worked as a scientist for the Environmental Protection Agency with the Federal Government.  He retired from US Enrichment Corporation.

Graveside Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Scioto Burial Park in McDermott with Elder Mike Chaffin and Elder Don Mattashed officiating. The family requests that all in attendance please wear masks. Sam did not want flowers sent in his memory. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at SOMC Hospice for the wonderful care given to Sam and his family during his stay.
