CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Multiple reported overdoses at a county jail have kept squad crews busy.

According to the Chillicothe Fire Department, their units have responded to the Ross County Jail five times in the last three days. While the fire department could not confirm the nature of the calls, dispatchers with Chillicothe Police Department said they were for reported overdoses.

The county jail has been plagued with issues under the direction of Sheriff George Lavender. Multiple inmates have died in the last 24 months and more than three dozen overdoses have occurred within the last six months.

The Guardian has previously reported that one jail employee was accused of smuggling drugs into inmates and was fired. Additionally, drugs have been found hidden inside inmate mail in recent months.

Calls to the Sheriff seeking comment for this story were not returned.
