Dayton, OH — During a press conference at blaCk Coffee lounge, a local black-owned small business in Cincinnati, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley rolled out her jobs plan to invest in Ohio for the 21st Century.
As our economy recovers from the pandemic, Ohio needs a Governor who is laser-focused on supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs, creating the jobs of the future, and raising wages for all Ohioans, Whaley’s team said in a release.
The story of America’s 20th Century is the story of Ohio. People came here for opportunity – immigrants from abroad, migrants from Appalachia and the Jim Crow South. We were home to inventors like the Wright Brothers, Garrett Morgan, and Thomas Edison, and pioneering companies like National Cash Register, Goodyear Rubber, and Republic Steel. Good, union jobs in manufacturing built our middle class and the natural resources, transportation, and supply chains supporting these industries ensured prosperity stretched all over our state. But for thirty years, our political leaders have allowed Ohio to fall further and further behind, choosing complacency over tough, honest conversations about the future of our state. Politicians in Columbus have been more interested in lining their own pockets than supporting Ohio workers and communities. That’s why Nan is announcing her plan to invest in Ohio again and position our state to take advantage of the jobs of the 21st Century and beyond.
“The world is changing – new industries and technologies are creating the good-paying jobs of the future. We can either adapt and change with it, or be left behind. Ohio is at a crossroads. I’m running for Governor because I believe Ohio can once again be the economic powerhouse of this country – where one good job is enough and where our entrepreneurs are starting cutting edge companies. I believe we can get there, but only if we come together and demand a new direction.
“Ohio’s people are at the center of its economy – how Ohioans are doing around their kitchen tables each day is what matters the most. That’s why Ohio’s families are at the heart of my jobs policy,” said Nan Whaley.
As Governor, Nan’s jobs plan would:
- Invest in Ohio’s Businesses. Ohio businesses and their employees know better than any of us that they are the heartbeat of our state. Ohio’s government needs to support them if they are to create the high wage jobs of the future.
- Invest in 21st Century Jobs to Make Sure the Future is Built in Ohio. Ohio led the last manufacturing revolution and there’s no reason we can’t lead the next one. We need to focus on preparing for and growing the jobs of the future right here in our state, so that folks all across Ohio have the opportunity to thrive.
- Invest in Ohio’s Workers by Raising Wages for All Ohioans. Dignity at work begins with good pay. Wages need to go up across the board in Ohio so that one good job can be enough.
