ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio – An Athens County man will spend the next several years in prison for stealing hundreds of items from mailboxes throughout the county, authorities said.
Thursday, 27-year-old Dalton Spangler pled guilty to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. According to court records, Judge Patrick Lang added additional time for multiple probation violations.
Spangler was sentenced to 11-to-15 years in prison and was ordered to pay $288 in restitution, according to Athens County Prosecutor Kellar Blackburn.
In August 2020, Athens Police were notified by residents of multiple mailbox thefts. Officials say, three checks from one residence were deposited fraudulently into Spangler’s bank account.
Police executed a search warrant at his residence where, reports say, officers found hundreds of pieces of mail and packages from Athens and neighboring counties.
At least 201 people were victimized by Spangler’s thefts, according to the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.
