PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — A unique story took place in Pickaway County over the weekend: a football star swapped her helmet for a tiara.
Teays Valley High School held their homecoming on Friday, and while many votes were cast for candidates to be part of the homecoming court at the school’s football game, one stood out.
Sydnie Frey is a senior and has played on the school’s football team all four years as a kicker. She recently made history as being the first girl to ever score a goal for the district. But Frey, who is 17, cemented her name further in the history books on Friday when her school voted her to be homecoming queen just seconds before she was set to take the field.
She had to go swap her football helmet — the only Friday headwear she’s known for the last four years as part of the varsity team — for a tiara.
Frey took the crown, bouquet, and sash, while wearing a full football uniform with pads, and walked onto the field to cheers and applause from those in attendance, and posed for photos.
Her mother, Corrie Frey, commented on her daughter’s unique accomplishment.
“She’s a pretty amazing young lady, but of course moms are biased.”
The following night, Frey took off both her helmet and tiara and let her hair down as she danced the night away at the homecoming celebration.
