HOCKING COUNTY, Ohio — Hocking County Sheriff Lanny E. North said the man who led his deputies on a high-speed chase is in jail.
On October 5, Sheriff Lanny E. North said his office received a report of a truck stolen from the area of Route 328. According to reports, deputies went to the scene and made a report of the stolen vehicle.
Later in the day, authorities said, the truck was traveling on Route 33 near Route 664. Deputies said they tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, reaching speeds close to 100 miles per hour.
Law enforcement followed the truck as it raced down Route 33 before making its way to Bensonhaver Road, where the high-speed chase ended.
Officials say the driver, Matthew C. Long, 38, Carbon Hill, and his passenger, Tatum M. Shultz, 21, Glouster, both fled on foot but were apprehended a short time later.
The two suspects were both charged with multiple felonies for their involvement in the chase and vehicle theft. Reports say Long already had an active warrant for his arrest from a previous police chase.
Sheriff North said additional charges are pending in the case. Suspected narcotics, according to officials, were also found inside the stolen vehicle.
Long is currently being housed in the Southeast Regional Jail in Nelsonville.
