COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Steubenville man pled guilty in federal district court today on narcotics-related charges. According to authorities, he could face up to life in prison.

Llyod George Douglas, Jr., 39, admitted to trying to acquire over 400 grams of the deadly synthetic opioid.

According to court records, in May of this year, police in California seized a package addressed to Douglas. The package, police say, contained nearly 500 grams of fentanyl. Experts say that quantity was enough to kill over 250,000 people.

As part of the investigation, officials said, they arranged a “controlled delivery” of the package. The drugs, according to police, were swapped for an electronic device that would alert them once someone opened the package.

Authorities said Douglas took the package to a secondary residence in Steubenville, where he later opened it. Official reports said Douglas ran from the home after discovering the device inside. Law enforcement officers took him into custody shortly after.

Investigators said they searched both residences belonging to Douglas and found firearms and cash.

A date for sentencing has not been set, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
