SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio — In a daring robbery attempt, a man wearing underwear on his head entered Shawnee Grocery Store located at 721 U.S. Highway 52 in Stout, Ohio, on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at approximately 9:06 pm, armed with a gun. He pointed the gun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register, according to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman.
Upon receiving the call, Sheriff Thoroughman stated that deputies and detectives quickly responded to the scene. After obtaining a description of the suspect’s vehicle, it was revealed that it was a stolen vehicle from Auto Zone in Portsmouth.
An Adams County deputy spotted the suspect vehicle driving in the area of Germany Hill Road and U.S. 52, and made a felony stop on the vehicle, detaining the suspect until backup arrived.
Inside the stolen vehicle, deputies recovered the stolen money, the firearm used in the robbery, and the underwear used by the suspect to cover his head during the robbery.
The suspect was identified as Davonta Edward Mitchell, age 30, with a last known address of 2550 Lone Oak Road #207 in Paducah, KY. Mitchell has been charged with Aggravated Robbery, Kidnapping, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, and Theft, and is being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $207,500 bond. He is set to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday, February 6, 2023.
Sheriff Thoroughman stated, “I am proud of the quick response and teamwork demonstrated by our deputies and detectives in apprehending this suspect and recovering the stolen property.”
