Elder Emeritus Sherman A. Johnson, Sr., 91, of Bidwell, Ohio, passed away on Sunday at 11:35am, February 5, 2023 at the Abbyshire Place, following an extended illness.
He was born November 6, 1931, in Chillicothe, Ohio, son of the late Lawrence T. and Charlotta “Lottie” (Luckett) Johnson. On November 2, 1968, he married his beloved wife, Cheryl A. “Tykie” (Jenkins) Johnson, who survives.
Also surviving are their children, Julius Bayless, Karen Johnson, David Johnson, Shelan (Robert) Jackson, Sherman A. Johnson, Jr., Stephani Maynard, and Donald “Donnie” Johnson; grandchildren, RoShawn Bayless, Jeremy Bayless, Tony Johnson, Tasha Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Tim Tyus, Kara (Laiven) Porter, Ciara Jackson, RaHeem Johnson, Kendra Maynard, Kaylee Chapman, Donovan Johnson, Macie Johnson, and Myles Johnson; his siblings, Reggie Johnson, Evelyn “Ebbie” Johnson, India Sims, Bertha Johnson, and Becky Johnson; close friends, Bishop Melvin Maughmer, Sr., Harold Beverly, and Larry Grant, Sr.; as well as an abundance of beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Johnson, a daughter-in-law, Debbie Bayless, grandson, Dorado Bayless, four brothers, and three sisters.
Sherman was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He went on to work as a cement contractor for many years before retiring. He was a co-founder of the Apostolic Faith Church in Bidwell, Ohio, where he went on to serve as Pastor from 1977-2014.
He was a member of the Ohio District Council of the PAW, Inc; and a member of the former Gallia Economic Development Association. In his free time, he loved being outdoors working in his vegetable garden and his flower garden. He also enjoyed sitting on his porch, fellowshipping with neighbors, and taking walks. His family will fondly remember his love for playing pranks, but especially his devotion to God, family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, February 10, 2023 at the Original Glorious Church of God in Christ with Pastor Mike Maughmer officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation from 11:00am until the time of the service. Graveside services in Bidwell, Ohio will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to Haller Funeral Home to help with expenses.
