COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio — A commercial vehicle carrying 40,000 pounds of contaminated soil from the East Palestine train derailment site was involved in a crash on SR-165, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The northbound tractor trailer traveled off the roadway and overturned onto its right side, spilling approximately 20,000 pounds of soil onto the roadway and berm.

The Ohio EPA and local fire department were immediately contacted, and the spill was contained. The Ohio EPA reports that the spill is not a threat to nearby waterways. The driver of the commercial vehicle sustained minor injuries.

As a result of the accident, the Ohio Department of Transportation closed SR 165 at SR 617 in Mahoning County and at SR 14 in Columbiana County. The local authorities have advised motorists to seek alternative routes until further notice.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the accident.
