PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — An ongoing investigation into the death of a baby has resulted in the arrest of a Lucasville woman on multiple charges. Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman and Portsmouth Police Chief Debby Brewer announced the arrest of Mahala Hughes, 22, at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Thoroughman, the investigation began on March 14 after detectives received a report of a woman giving birth at a house in Portsmouth. Unfortunately, the baby was found to be deceased. Detectives responded to the hospital and collected evidence, as well as statements. The stillborn infant was sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

As a result of the investigation, a case was presented to the Scioto County Grand Jury on April 14, resulting in a secret indictment warrant being issued. Hughes was arrested on two counts of Involuntary Manslaughter, one count of Possession of a Fentanyl Related Compound, and two counts of Endangering Children.

Hughes is currently being held without bond and will appear at Common Pleas Court at a later date. Sheriff Thoroughman stated that the joint investigation is ongoing and could result in more charges being presented in the future.
