FAYETTE COUNTY, Ohio — A peaceful early morning in Wayne Township, Fayette County, was interrupted by an act of harrowing violence, only to be stopped by a heroic family pet.

Early Friday morning, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency 911 call from a resident living at 3891 North Street, who reported being assaulted by a family member with an axe. The suspect was later identified as Derek J. Honacher.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered that Honacher had entered the victim’s bedroom and launched an unprovoked assault, striking the resident multiple times with an axe. An ensuing struggle revealed the unexpected hero of the day — the victim’s dog, who courageously bit Honacher several times. The dog’s protective intervention helped halt the violent attack, Sheriff Vernon P. Stanforth said.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld for safety and privacy reasons, was promptly treated for injuries sustained during the assault and has since been released. Honacher, the alleged perpetrator, was arrested on charges of attempted murder. Following his arrest, he was transported to a hospital in the Columbus area for treatment of injuries inflicted by the dog.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation into this shocking incident is ongoing. The findings will be presented to the Fayette County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration and potential additional charges.

“This case highlights the often-overlooked bravery of our animal companions and the invaluable support they provide in dangerous situation,” said Stanforth. “As this story continues to unfold, residents of Fayette County can rest easier knowing that a dangerous individual has been apprehended, and the local canine population is standing guard.”
