In solidarity with the deputies and their union, the Guardian will be changing its logo to support them until further notice.

At the very heart of every community lies an intricate web of protection, an unseen network of guardians who stand as the vigilant shield against the chaos that exists beyond our doorsteps. These are our law enforcement officers, our local heroes, our deputies from the Ross County Sheriff’s Office. Their story, as they are now denied the hard-earned pay they were promised, is a heart-wrenching reflection of a society that has neglected its protectors.

Let us first remember the sacrifice that these deputies willingly make every day. They step into the darkest corners of our community, face the grim realities that we often forget or refuse to acknowledge. Every day, they make the conscious choice to place themselves in danger, so that the rest of us may sleep more peacefully in our beds.

Two years ago, these brave men and women did something extraordinary. They chose to forsake their negotiated pay raise for the greater good of Ross County, believing in the promise of a ‘higher pay raise’ midway through their union contract. It was a sacrifice that underscored their dedication to public service, a testament to their unwavering commitment to our community.

Today, these heroes are met with betrayal.

As the time has come for the Ross County Commissioners to honor their agreement, they have refused to even negotiate. This act not only violates the contract but, more importantly, it undermines the unwritten social contract between society and its protectors. It tells our deputies that their sacrifice, their dedication, their daily struggle is not worthy of reward.

Let us not forget the recent shooting of Eric Kocheran, who almost died and is still battling with the wounds of his shooting. His pay has ended after six months of leave, despite the county saying they would “do something” to see that he was paid beyond the six months. Every tearful goodbye they bid to their families, every danger they face, every life they risk; doesn’t this deserve decent pay? Don’t they deserve respect? Isn’t it upsetting to think that those who pledge to guard us are being shortchanged?

The Ross County Commissioners have a history of not standing by their contractual commitments. This time, their neglect is aimed towards those who form the backbone of our community’s safety. Their refusal to honor the agreed raise strikes a blow to the morale of our deputies, to the trust of our community, and to the fundamental principles of fairness and respect.

At the Guardian, we stand in solidarity with the Ross County Sheriff’s Office deputies and their union, Teamsters 284 Blue Unit. Our support stems not only from understanding the urgency of their demand but from the heartfelt respect for the sacrifices they make for us each day.

Let’s not forget that these deputies are more than just law enforcement officers. They are our neighbors, friends, and family. They are the guardians who keep our streets safe, our homes secure, and our children protected. They deserve every bit of support and recognition that we can give them.

To the Ross County Commissioners, we say: it’s time to honor your commitment. It’s time to respect the men and women who protect us day in and day out. It’s time to give them the raise they not only were promised, but so justly deserve.

We, at the Guardian, stand with Teamsters 284 Blue Unit. We call on all our readers to voice their support too. In this hour of need, let us stand by those who have always stood for us. Let us repay our debt to our neglected guardians. It’s time to do what is right; it’s time to follow what was agreed, and it’s time to stop playing with people’s lives.
