ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — A historic Native American site, Seip Mound, was reportedly desecrated as per information from the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.
On August 20, around 1:50 pm, deputies responded to a Trespass complaint at Seip Mound. Upon arrival, deputies engaged with two site attendants who witnessed a family (consisting of an adult male, adult female, two juvenile females, and one juvenile male) arrive in a Ford pickup truck towing a trailer with a golf cart. The family, per the witnesses, was observed driving the golf cart on the grass and then onto the burial mound. Additionally, the two juvenile females were witnessed removing their lower clothing and urinating near a pavilion, according to the report.
Photographs were provided by the witnesses, capturing the family’s actions, including the indecent exposure of the juveniles and revealing the license plate of the Ford Truck, the license plate on the trailer, and a handicap parking sticker. Furthermore, a video taken by the attendants displayed the face of the adult male and a side view of the adult female.
Deputies, per the report, confirmed that the truck and trailer were registered to an individual in Greenfield. A Criminal Trespass complaint is being pursued, and the family, the sheriff’s office said, is to be barred from returning to Seip Mound.
Seip Mound, according to the National Park Service is a burial site built by the Adena people in the Scioto River Valley of Ohio. It is part of a larger complex of mounds. The mound, experts say, was likely used to bury important individuals and may have also served ceremonial purposes.
