CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Mighty Children’s Museum hosts ice skating at their user-friendly skating rink in the parking lot of The Pumphouse Art Gallery each weekend in November and December.
Skaters of all ages and abilities enjoy the freedom of sailing across the ice, especially when the unusual temperature of 50 degrees hangs around.
Several local businesses and community groups sponsor each week’s events at the rink.
On Sunday, the First Wesleyan Church of downtown Chillicothe made sure the families had more to do than just skate. Volunteers handed out hot chocolate and smores while others helped by giving out the perfect fitting ice skates. The theme was Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and the rink was decorated as such. The Mighty Children’s Museum has tried to offer the ice skating for free by having the community organizations and businesses donate.
Bleachers are set up around the rink so families can let the kids have fun and they can watch or take photos. The tumbling kiddos are quick to get right back up and even wave to the crowd in the bleachers. Assistive skating supports were available for those who wanted to push a child in a buggy on the ice and standers were also available if skaters wanted to hold onto something while they tried to keep their balance.
Among the participants were the ambitious skater friend group, Addylin Elliott, Demi Carey, and Aubree Hough. Hough’s great grandmother was watching with a smile and happy to see the event being held in Chillicothe.
While at the skating rink, there is also another activity that families can enjoy. The Pumphouse Art Gallery has a December Holiday show. For details visit www.thepumphouse.art or call 740-772-5783.
Skating is open on Fridays from 4pm to 8pm, Saturdays 12pm to 8pm, and Sundays from 12pm to 4pm. The rink will be open through December 23rd. For information, visit www.mightymuseum.org.
