ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — A man serving prison time in Ross County has been charged with murder.

Dontrell Jaynes, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for various crimes, now faces charges related to the 2021 murder of 62-year-old David Gaines in Columbus.

The murder transpired on January 6, 2021, at 3:18 a.m., when Columbus Police responded to a shooting report at the Sunoco station located at 1799 E. Hudson St. Upon arrival, officers discovered Gaines with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate transport to Grant Medical Center, Gaines died.

This week, a Franklin County Grand Jury issued indictments against Jaynes, accusing him of Aggravated Murder and Aggravated Robbery in connection to Gaines’ death. Currently incarcerated at the Ross Correctional Institution for an unrelated offense, Jaynes had previously pleaded guilty to felonious assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, attempted murder, and obstruction of official business in February, resulting in a 20-year prison term. Now, he faces the prospect of answering murder charges in court, which carries the possibility of the death penalty.
