PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — Deputies with Pickaway County are investigating a fatal crash late-Wednesday night.

Authorities were alerted by an in-car crash detection system that an accident had occurred on Florence Chapel Road, close to Route 104. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a a pickup off he roadway, extensively damaged in the front-end and cab. The driver, identified as 34-year-old James R. Herlan of Circleville, was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat.

Investigations revealed that the Ford F-150 was heading eastbound around a curve when it lost control, flipped, and collided with a tree, ultimately landing back on its wheels. Tragically, Herlan was pronounced dead at the scene by Scioto Township EMS.

Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey expressed gratitude to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Harrison Township EMS, Scioto Township EMS, and the Pickaway County Coroner for their collaborative efforts in response to the incident.

The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the accident to determine the factors contributing to the crash. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
