CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Humane Society of the United States, in collaboration with Ohio-based law firm Holland & Muirden, has initiated legal proceedings against Petland, Inc., a Chillicothe-based pet store company, accusing the chain of engaging in fraudulent and misleading sales practices that left three Ohio families with sick puppies.

The lawsuits, filed by Holland & Muirden, highlight the stories of three plaintiffs who experienced deceptive sales practices at various Petland stores across Ohio. Among them is Rosemarie Haddad, a 70-year-old widow with health challenges, who alleges she was pressured into purchasing a Rottweiler puppy from the Carriage Place, Ohio, Petland store. Despite her physical and financial constraints, Haddad claims she signed an agreement committing her to pay $7,500 for the puppy, which soon exhibited health issues.

Macey Mullins, another plaintiff, purchased a Jack Russell terrier puppy named June from Petland’s Lewis Center, Ohio, store for $4,600. Contrary to assurances from the staff, it was later revealed that the puppy came from a puppy mill broker, resulting in severe health complications. June was ultimately euthanized, and Mullins has not been reimbursed for veterinary bills.

Robert and Chrystal Rivas, who bought an English bulldog puppy named Louie from a Chillicothe, Ohio, Petland store, allege that the puppy suffered from undisclosed health issues, including a severely underdeveloped pelvis and hip dysplasia. The Rivases have faced significant challenges caring for Louie, including potential costly surgery.

Mark Finneran, Ohio state director for the Humane Society of the United States, expressed concern, stating, “Welcoming a new puppy should be a time of joy and celebration, but for these families, Petland only delivered heartbreak.” The plaintiffs aim to hold Petland accountable for alleged deceptive practices affecting both consumers and animals.
