COLUMBUS, Ohio — A coalition of leaders spearheading a campaign to reform redistricting in Ohio is emphasizing the urgency of ending gerrymandering. While acknowledging the complexity of the district-drawing process, they assert that necessary changes are straightforward: “Political insiders have no business being in the process.”

During a panel discussion held on Monday at Ohio State University’s campus, prominent figures engaged in a robust conversation about the impact of gerrymandering on political power. The panel included retired Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, League of Women Voters of Ohio Director Jen Miller, political science professor Ange-Marie Hancock, law professor Steven Huefner, and Yurij Rudensky from the Brennan Center Democracy Program.

The panel members rallied behind an initiative championed by the coalition Citizens Not Politicians. According to the group, their proposed amendment aims to eradicate gerrymandering by shifting the power to draw districts away from politicians and toward citizens. The key provisions of their proposal include:

  1. Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission:
    • Comprising 15 members, this commission would consist of Democratic, Republican, and Independent citizens.
    • The goal is to ensure broad representation across different geographic areas and demographics within the state.
  2. Exclusion of Political Insiders:
    • Current or former politicians, political party officials, and lobbyists would be barred from serving on the commission.
    • This measure aims to prevent conflicts of interest and undue influence.
  3. Fair and Impartial Districts:
    • The amendment would make it unconstitutional to draw voting districts that discriminate against any political party or individual politician.
    • The focus is on creating equitable representation for all citizens.
  4. Transparency and Independence:
    • The commission would operate under an open and independent process, promoting transparency and public trust.

As Ohio voters prepare for the upcoming elections, the call for redistricting reform resonates strongly. Advocates believe that empowering citizens to shape fair districts is essential for preserving democratic principles and ensuring a level playing field.
