COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus police officer was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of destroying or altering records related to a criminal investigation.
Nicholas P. Duty, 35, of Commercial Point, is accused of purposefully deactivating or removing his body-worn camera on two occasions in an attempt to obstruct a federal investigation. He was arrested today and scheduled to appear in federal court at 12:45 p.m.
The indictment alleges that Duty deactivated or removed his camera during interactions with two women, including a sexual encounter, on Oct. 31, 2023, and March 22, 2024. Duty was on duty, in uniform, and driving a marked police vehicle during both incidents. He was required to comply with Columbus Division of Police policies regarding body-worn cameras.
Knowingly altering records to obstruct a federal investigation carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
