COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) is expanding access to Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT), a vital mental health service for youth, to 59 counties, including new services in Highland and Jackson counties. This expansion brings the total number of counties with IHBT access to 76 out of 88, addressing a significant gap in mental health care for young people in underserved areas.

IHBT is an intensive, time-limited program that provides comprehensive mental health support to youth and their families within their homes, schools, and communities. This tailored approach aims to address the complex challenges faced by young people with serious emotional disabilities, often preventing the need for more restrictive interventions.

“Expanding access to IHBT puts help within reach for vulnerable kids and families who may not be able to get care when they need it today,” said ODM Director Maureen Corcoran, emphasizing the importance of reaching underserved areas.

This expansion is a key part of OhioRISE, the state’s transformative program to address the complex behavioral health needs of children and youth.

The $10 million initiative will not only launch new IHBT programs in 33 counties but also bolster existing services in 26 counties where the need exceeds current capacity. Grant funds will support the development of these programs, ensuring that more young people and their families have access to this critical mental health resource.

All providers receiving grants will be certified or are working towards certification in IHBT through the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addictions Services. The state’s Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Center of Excellence at Case Western Reserve University will provide comprehensive training and support to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the expanded services.

“IHBT is an innovative service that promotes positive development and healthy family functioning,” said Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Director LeeAnne Cornyn. “We are proud to be partners in equipping Ohio kids and families with the essential services and supports they need.”
