COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Attorney General’s Office has dismissed a petition seeking to remove legal protections for government entities and employees in civil rights lawsuits. The petition, which aimed to amend the state constitution, was rejected due to the absence of a title.
State law requires a title for proposed constitutional amendments to ensure voters can accurately understand the measure. Without a title, the Attorney General’s Office determined it couldn’t verify that the petition’s summary accurately reflected the amendment’s content.
The petition, submitted on July 5, had garnered the necessary 1,000 signatures to proceed. However, the lack of a title proved to be a fatal flaw.
The Attorney General’s Office emphasized the importance of the title in providing voters with clear information about proposed constitutional changes. While the petition was rejected on this basis, the office reserves the right to address other potential issues if the petition is resubmitted.
