CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A theft complaint at a local Dollar General escalated into a tense standoff on Monday, as police attempted to apprehend a suspect who allegedly threatened officers with a firearm.
The incident began on August 19, when police were dispatched to the Dollar General on East Main Street in response to a report of theft. According to the store’s management, the suspect, identified as Ralph Mangus, had entered the store on August 18, consumed a beverage without paying, and left a perishable item outside a freezer, rendering it unsellable. The total value of the items involved was $6.10.
After leaving his ID at the store, Mangus did not return to complete the transaction as he had agreed. Police later attempted to contact Mangus at his residence on Diehl Street to resolve the situation.
Upon arrival, officers heard what they believed to be the sound of a handgun being prepared for use inside the residence. Mangus allegedly responded to police attempts to communicate by making threats and demanding that they leave. Fearing for their safety, officers withdrew from the scene and requested additional support.
Authorities, according to the report provided, are now seeking arrest warrants for Mangus on charges of theft, criminal mischief, and aggravated menacing.
